Scorers: Stranraer - Lyon (45)

A STUBBORN and resilient second half defensive showing from Stranraer helped them end a three-game losing streak and claim three valuable points.

Ross Lyon's first senior career goal, scored at the very end of the first half, proved the difference between the two sides.

The victory also moved the Blues closer to Stevie Farrell's target of 40 points and came without the services of David Barron and Angus Beith, who were both missing through injury.

It meant another reshuffle after the midweek defeat to Arbroath.

Tuesday night's goalscorer Cameron MacPherson moved to right back, with Jamie Hamill partnering Scott Robertson at the heart of the defence.

Fit-again Kyle Turner returned to the starting lineup along with Dylan Dykes and Stephen Okoh, as Lyon and Dean Hawkshaw made their first starts for the club.

Stranraer started promisingly and could have broken the deadlock in the first five minutes.

Ryan Thomson rose highest to direct Lyon's corner towards goal but Callum Crane was in the right place to clear off the line.

That was just about the only clear cut chance of the opening 45 minutes.

However, there would be one more as Lyon marked his first start for the club with a goal.

The midfielder managed to find a pocket of space on the right hand side of the box and get his shot away and it somehow squirmed past Neil Parry at his near post.

It was a somewhat unexpected - but equally probably deserved - lead going into the half time break.

It was also a goal which really opened up the game and sparked Alloa into action.

Thomson fired an 18-yard drive over the bar in the opening 60 seconds of the second half but from them on it was one-way traffic.

Jon Robertson was first to threaten Max Currie's goal but his header from six yards had no real pace or direction and was easily dealt with.

Then, just before the hour mark, the Wasps had the ball in the net.

Kris Renton collided with Currie and smashed the loose ball home but had clearly fouled the Stranraer number one in winning the ball and the goal was chopped off.

Currie, who had impressed despite the defeat to Arbroath, was again catching the eye.

He comfortably held Iain Flannigan's curling free kick and was decisive in coming for other set pieces.

Jim Goodwin's side were becoming increasingly attacking with Ross Stewart thrown on to add to Renton's presence up front.

The substitute dragged a shot from 18 yards wide of the post and then, with seven minutes remaining, blasted past the same upright when he should have found the target.

It was a nervy end to the game for Stranraer, who battled well to maintain their narrow lead.

In the end, it proved enough, with the Blues coming out victorious as they now head into the final quarter of the season.
