Scorers: Forfar Athletic - Peters (4); Stranraer - Stoney (90+2)

SUPERSUB Danny Stoney rescued a point for a Stranraer with a late, late strike to deny Forfar their first win since the opening day of the season.

The Blues came into the tie on the back of a 6-2 thumping last week and welcomed back Scott Robertson, with Tom Lang also handed a recall in the absence of David Barron and Liam Dick.

Paul Woods had shaken off a knock, which meant Kyle Turner had to be content with a place on the bench.

If Stranraer were looking to get off to a flier and put last weekend's defeat to Arbroath behind them, they got off to the worst possible start.

Just over three minutes were on the clock when the home side broke the deadlock. Jim Lister's initial shot was blocked but fell kindly to Josh Peters, who swept the ball home from inside the box.

Lister, whose afternoon was cut short through injury, pulled a shot wide of the upright moments later before Cameron Belford juggled a Mark Millar corner under his own crossbar.

It was not until after the half hour mark that Stranraer forced a save from Marc McCallum. Grant Anderson and Scott Agnew had swapped wings and it was the two midfielders who combined to test the home number one.

Anderson's cross was met by Agnew but his volley was at an awkward height and McCallum managed to get something behind it.

The Blues, who had made two changes in the first half with Turner and Stoney coming on for Ryan Wallace and Lang, did improve after the break though.

Agnew forced McCallum into a good save from a free kick from 20 yards before Anderson then flicked a header past the post from the resultant corner.

Still, Stranraer were looking nervous at the back and survived a worrying attack moments later.

Belford did well to block the dangerous David Cox but the ball struck Steven Bell and looped agonisingly back towards the goal before the captain made the clearance.

Forfar quickly attacked again and Cox was again involved, teeing up Ousman See, with Belford out quickly to make another save.

The Stranraer number one was becoming increasingly busy and he denied Cox for a third time before preventing See from getting to the rebound with 25 minutes to go.

As time ticked by, the travelling support could have been forgiven for wondering where any goal would come from.

But, in the final five minutes, the Blues turned up the pressure and could even have snatched all three points.

Agnew's drive from fully 35 yards almost deceived McCallum, who could only parry it back into the danger zone.

Substitute Stephen Okoh reacted quickest, but the striker could only clip the top off the crossbar with the goal gaping.

That seemed to be the last chance, but there was to be one final cruel twist for the home fans.

Morgyn Neill's long ball into the box was flicked on by Robertson and Stoney had the time to bring the ball down and smash it past McCallum.

There was only time for Forfar to take kickoff before referee Scott Millar blew for full time.

Stranraer had enjoyed plenty of possession and come close but Forfar fans surely thought they had done enough for the win.

However, the Blues only need to look back to August and a trip to Hampden Park to remember a last minute goal denied them all three points.
